ABOUT THE IRFP

The International Research Forum on the Philippines (IRFP) began as a gathering of Filipino postgraduate students in Australia and a research-sharing opportunity. Years later, the IRFP expanded its reach by including Filipino scholars and community leaders from the Philippines, Australia, and beyond.

Spearheaded by the Filipino Australian Students Council (FASTCO) of Victoria since 2013, the IRFP has played an instrumental role in fostering critical thinking, promoting networking opportunities, and facilitating dialogue on pressing issues among established scholars, postgraduate students, early career researchers, and community leaders.

This year, FASTCO, in collaboration with the Philippines-Australia Forum of the La Trobe University (PAF-La Trobe), invite everyone to join and present their research in the International Research Forum on the Philippines (IRFP) 2024 on 1 to 2 August 2024 at the La Trobe University’s City Campus in Victoria, Australia. The objective of the IRFP 2024 is to bring a diverse community of academics, researchers, and students with a shared interest in the Philippines. The IRFP 2024 also offers an opportunity for scholars to highlight their work while encouraging a broader debate and exchange of ideas among participants.

Sustaining filipino knowledge

Sustainability is more than eco-friendly tote bags, corporate social responsibility schemes, or global climate agreements. Real and sustainable change in the world today takes time, and requires listening to complicated conversations that bring different stakeholders together. In order to transform society, our behaviour and ways of thinking we must consider sustainability as a cultural movement of incremental progress that works for all and not just a few.

This August, panels will be organised around the topic of food, work, social ventures, and new technologies. Bringing together leading researchers, industry practitioners, and the community in an ongoing conversation about sustainability. An open call or expression of interest has been issued to organise small group workshops and work-in-progress sessions throughout the 2-day event.

PANEL DISCUSSIONS

Panel 1: The Anatomy of a Dish: Sustaining Filipino Identity through Food

Institutions like Serai, Adobros, Askal, CEREE, and Kariton Sorbetes, are just a few Filipino-run enterprises that are transforming Filipino cuisine in Melbourne and Australia  as we know it. This panel will discuss the meaning of sustaining the Filipino identity through food.

Panel 2: Multiple Forms of Value Creation in the New Economy

There are many forms of value circulating in the global economy today. It is usually currency and finance that are spoken about but how do other forms of value like cultural value, educational value, and societal value contribute to progress.

Panel 3: Filipinos in the Care Economy

The Filipino national identity is synonymous In the care economies of health care, hospitality, and education across the globe. More recently, the landmark NDIS legislation and rollout in Australia has unlocked a new wave of migration amongst Filipino professionals and students.

Panel 4: Mobilising Scientific Knowledge towards Sustainability

Filipino scientists and practitioners in STEM will be brought to  a conversation about how their specialised research and knowledge-building is contributing towards global, national and local sustainability goals.

Open Call | Workshops and In-Progress Sessions

This year we invite EOIs for small workshops and work-in-progress sessions, approximately 45 minutes each. These forums will allow in-person feedback on new research projects.  In addition, it will be an opportunity for researchers to connect with their chosen communities.

We welcome inter-, multi-, and cross-disciplinary perspectives and approaches in addressing this year’s theme.
